Last week I had the privilege of going to all the schools in the South African Reddam House group to do some training with various teams. I was looking forward to the trip as I would finally be able to put names to the faces behind emails. It was exciting travelling to Cape Town and Joburg and going to places that I have never been and I LOVE meeting new people. But, what surprised me the most was the number of people who shared the same passions that I have. At my school in Ballito, there are only a handle of these teachers and I thought we were the minority. BUT, I was inspired to see how many passionate people there are out there.

It got me thinking about how we enter into silos at work and at church and we may find ourselves frustrated that no-one else or very few share some of our interests or passions. This often happens naturally as we categorise people into boxes of our own making. How are we cross-pollinating with others?

Would we benefit from visiting other churches?

Our world is full of passionate people who share a God-given drive that we do.

Breaking Out of Our Silos

Last week, I had the privilege of visiting all the schools in the South African Reddam House group to train various teams. I was excited—not only to travel to Cape Town and Joburg, seeing new places—but also to finally put faces to the names behind emails. I love meeting new people, but what surprised me most was how many shared my passions. At my school in Ballito, I thought we were a small, rare group, but this trip showed me that passionate people are everywhere.

It made me think about how often we find ourselves in silos—at work, at church, in life. We assume we’re alone in our passions simply because we’re surrounded by a small circle. But what if we stepped outside our usual spaces? What if we made an effort to connect, collaborate, and share with those beyond our immediate community?

Would we benefit from visiting other churches? From engaging with believers outside our usual circles?

God has placed passionate, like-minded people all around us—we just have to look beyond our silos to find them.
