Notes

Part 1 - Foundations

Social media -

Attention economy - apps/services/products that are not focussed on the app/service/product to be the end goal; but rather creating apps/services/products that attract attention that can be sold to advertisers. - Companies spend BILLIONS of dollars on optimizing apps so that we interact with them as much as possible. - As an individual, we have no chance to compete with this. - Since the penny newspaper, "attention publications" have moved from creating a quality product to sell to you as a customer to creating an enticing product to get your attention and sell that attention to advertisers as the customer.

Part 2 - Practices

1. Solitude

We cannot operate a meaningful life if we do not have equal parts solitude as we do productivity.

Solitude deprivation - the "attention economy" constantly pulls us away from all small moments of solitude. - The smart phone is the "trojan horse" that brings billboards into our pocket. - We spend little time thinking, reflecting. Even time spend waiting in a queue is filled with consuming others thoughts.

2. Don't click like

3. Reclaim Leisure

Low-quality vs high quality activities

4. Join the attention resistance
