UMC20221204 Focus
UMC20221204 - FocusΒΆ
In my life there are two ways that I tend to lose focus. Either I have so much to do that I get overwhelmed and end up procrastinating to avoid starting OR I become obsessively side-tracked with a project (unrelated to my current tasks) and it is all I can think about until it is completed. Currently I am in the second mode of losing focus. At school we have changed our SMIS (school management information system) and there are a whole lot of new ways to manage our schools data and reporting. It gets me really excited! And I have become obsessed with learning new technologies and thinking about how to make life easier for our school. But this can be done next year, I should be doing my marking, report comments and fixing the hole in the fence so that the dog doesn't dig up the garden.
When I lose focus like this, I develop a feeling of lostness and anxiety which only pushes me into further spiralling or obsession. I become agitated in my spirit. The thing is, we often think that in order to regain "control" in our lives, we should work harder and get on top of everything to settle our spirits. But when does the TO-DO list ever die down?
This week I am focussing on two scriptures: Proverbs 3.5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart... he will make your path straight" and Colossians 3.2, "Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things". Counter-intuitively, the more time we spend with God, the more settled we feel, the clearer we see and the more time that we feel we have.
Is there something that has pulled you out of joint? Are you focussing on tasks that you shouldn't be focussing on? God is always calling us back to Him. Let us spend this week listening.
Love, Cliff
