Reflection through internalization

When we are reflecting through internalization we are partaking in activities that allow for thought to flow from the outside in. These activities often challenge our internal state. We take on new ideas that we have never experienced before and they may clash with all the intangible beliefs and concepts that we hold about ourselves and the world. This in turn can cause new chains of thought and emotion to be generated. Our character and perspective then grow and widen, especially when the ideas are difficult and we wrestle with them.

When these tangible, in-the-world ideas collide with our internal state, they become a part of us. This is miraculous! A deep part of someone else has now become a part of us. Evolutionarily we can extend this idea to include the thousands of ideas, cultures and meanings of our ancestors living within us. Reflection through internalization allows us to grow our internal state to include pieces of other people, so that we can further understand it and expand and refine it.

Examples of internalization activities: - Listening to a podcast. - Reading articles or books. - Watching a movie/YouTube video. - Going to a lecture.

When we listen to the ideas of another person it allows us to mirror ourselves onto them and reflect and learn about ourselves through their ideas.
