Let the work come to you
let the work come to you¶
We need to know that presence is the primary goal and our secondary goal is the work that we are doing. It is not that our work is not important, but rather that if we are present, we will "know deeply" the work that we should be doing at this moment. When we are connected to the present moment, we are connected to life/God/Christ and are in a state of openness to what the current moment needs from us. This is how we should decide what to work on.
Peterson discusses a similar concept in his Biblical Lecture Series where he speaks of dreams and thoughts entering into our mind from "somewhere else" rather than being a construction of our own. This "somewhere else" has divine and mysterious qualities to it and the thoughts that are gifted to us this way should be respected and taken seriously. Peterson starts his day this way, he sits at his desk and asks the question, "What should I work on today that will be useful to the world" and then waits. He says, if this is asked with sincerity, the answer always comes. He may not like the answer, but it always comes.
When deciding what to work on in the next moment, we can then take this approach. Letting the work come from "somewhere else", through me and into the world. This can be thought of as "consulting God" on the work that God wants me to do. We can then think of ourselves as channels for God's work, ideas and love. We do not own the thoughts and ideas, we are simply vessels through which it can flow. This can be for very large projects which we are aiming for or small acts of rest and kindness. If we are present, if we listen, we will know what to do.
