Notes¶
Some of the things that I learnt from this book (though I disagree with much of his imagery):
1. Be a man¶
Stand up strong, take responsibility, exert yourself on the world, do not wait for things to happen.
2. Fight for your soul¶
It is the most important part of you. If your right eye causes you to sin, cut it out. Give up your addictions. Work hard. Do meaningful work. Do not take the easy way out. Do the hard work of reflection and dying to ones self.
3. Fight for your marriage¶
Same as above, throw out everything that effects your marriage negatively. Don't give up in arguments. Do the hard work of saying sorry. Think about your role often. Be serious about romance. Make the other feel special.
4. Masculine heart¶
- an adventure to live and a beauty to rescue
- a beauty to fight for
- dangerous
- daring
5. Feminine heart¶
- yearns to be fought for
- to invite a man in
- to be invited into adventure
What does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to be a woman? Should we even use these labels? Are they helpful? Is it helpful to create these stereotypes for what a man should/shouldn't be?
The book is about living dangerously, not in the sense that you should be unwise or take up being in the army. But to live dangerously means to take risks, to stand up for what you believe is right, to take responsibility. Win the woman, keep winning her, keep your adventure alive, don't let her be the adventure, seek God as the ultimate dangerous spirit.
